The UK's most senior military officer has warned of a new threat posed by Russia to communications and internet cables that run under the sea. Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, the chief of the defence staff, said Britain and Nato needed to prioritise protecting the lines of communication. He said it would "immediately and potentially catastrophically" hit the economy if they were cut or disrupted. The cables criss-cross the seabed, connecting up countries and continents. Russian submarines could cut off communications cables between the US and the UK, a defence chief has warned. Sir Stuart Peach, chief of the British defence staff, said Russian ships have been spotted close to Atlantic cables which are essential for international commerce and the internet. A report by think tank Policy Exchange estimated earlier this month that $10tn is transmitted in transactions through the cables. Read More: https://goo.gl/eGvX91
Russian submarines have dramatically stepped up activity around undersea data cables in the North Atlantic, part of a more aggressive naval posture that has driven Nato to revive a Cold War-era command, according to senior military officials. The apparent Russian focus on the cables, which provide internet and other communications connections to North America and Europe, could give the Kremlin the power to sever or tap into vital data lines, the officials said. Russian submarine activity has increased to levels unseen since the Cold War, they said, sparking hunts in recent months for the elusive watercraft. Read More: https://goo.gl/R6nuVm

As with landlines, breaks in underwater cables are not uncommon, especially close to shore. But as the New York Times noted in 2015, "what worries Pentagon planners most is that the Russians appear to be looking for vulnerabilities at much greater depths, where the cables are hard to monitor and breaks are hard to find and repair." If anything, the danger is only likely to increase. The proliferation of unmanned underwater vehicles—sea drones—has opened a new horizon of robots that can stealthily and cheaply destroy or eavesdrop on underwater cables. A Russian attack on undersea cables could cripple the United Kingdom's military and economy, British officials warn. "There is a new risk to our way of life, which is the vulnerability of the cables that criss-cross the seabeds," said Brita...
A Russian adrenaline junkie used his bare hands to grab a rusty cable he was zip-lining across to try to slow down, leaving parts of his skin and blood behind. A video posted by YTI-OG on Vimeo shows Sergey Utyugov and another man stand at the edge of a mountain in Nagorno-Karaback, a region in the south Caucasus at Azerbaijan. In front of them is a length of rusty metal cable stretching out over a steep valley. The two men rig up some home-made zip line equipment and rocket out over the vertigo-inducing valley. But as the crude zip line gear gathers momentum the pair are forced to grab the cable to slow down, without any gloves. Commenting on his Facebook page Mr Utyugov said they had to take off their gloves early into the descent. "The edge of fabric gloves got between the rope an...

The Largest Power Plant Of The World - Geographic History. The world's first power station was designed and built by Lord Armstrong at Cragside, England in 1868. Water from one of the lakes was used to power Siemens dynamos. The electricity supplied power to lights, heating, produced hot water, ran an elevator as well as labor-saving devices and farm buildings. The first public power station was the Edison Electric Light Station, built in London at 57, Holborn Viaduct, which started operation in January 1882. This was a project of Thomas Edison that was organized and managed by his partner, Edward Johnson. A Babcock and Wilcox boiler powered a 125-horsepower steam engine that drove a 27-ton generator called "Jumbo", after the celebrated elephant. This supplied electricity to premises in ...
